Annotated Bibliography – Digital Artefact Phobify on Instagram

 

  • Instagram

Instagram was created and launched by Kevin Systrom in 2010. Instagram is an online social networking service that allows users to take pictures and videos, and share them publicly or privately on the site. It generally appeals to people 35 years or under. Instagram is beneficial to my digital artefact as it acts as the platform that the digital artefact is established on, allowing me to post videos and pictures accompanied with people’s phobia experiences. Unlike other social media such as Facebook, Instagram does not have an instant message function making it difficult for audience submission. This was a significant limitation that needed to be alternatively addressed. Instagram is an extremely useful media platform to run Phobify.

 

  • The Phobia List

The Phobia List is an alphabetical inventory of phobias created by Fredd Culbertson, unqualified, in 1980 that was published online in 1995. The site does not have a target audience; however, it is presumed that anyone willing to gain knowledge about phobias would look at this site. The list is helpful for my digital artefact as it allows me to identify the correct terminology for phobias that are described by individuals who contribute to Phobify. Unlike other phobia pages, it is systematically structured and easy to read, making it a useful source. Nonetheless, it does seem unedited for several years, questioning the exemption of recently recognised phobias. The Phobia List significantly assists in the research and construction of my digital artefact posts.

Dr. Roxanne Dryden-Edwards is a psychiatrist who is the medical author of Phobias on MedicineNet.com. This site provides information on causes, symptoms and treatments of phobias. The site is considerably helpful and useful for my digital artefact, providing me with a significant amount of background knowledge into the psychology of a phobia. I am yet to see another website as extensive and detailed as the one on MedicineNet making it reasonably reliable. This website helped form the basis of my understanding to the extent in which phobias effect people and how to process Phobify submissions in a clean and ethical manner.

 

Gmail is a free email service provided by Google and Facebook and is an online social media service created by Mark Zuckerberg. Both sites are exceedingly helpful for my digital artefact as they allow me to receive phobia stories, submitted by members of the public. By having two forms of communication methods to receive responses, it provides choice for audiences to communicate their phobias to me and hence may increase responses. Both these websites, thus far, has proven to be extremely useful, which is evident by the amount of stories and responses I have received since the conception of Phobify.

Jayson DeMers, writer, penned this Forbes article in 2015. The intended audience are individuals looking to greaten their following on Instagram, which I aim to do for my digital artefact. I found the article useful as it provided me with a variety of tips including hashtags to use and best posting times to reach a greater audience. I found once implementing these techniques to Phobify, viewer participation increased. Compared to other sites, Forbes seemed the most extensive with the amount of ways to increase audience participation on Instagram. This article appreciably increased my knowledge on how to achieve a coherent page and entice a larger participatory audience, which are key criteria in the digital artefact assessment.

Jacob Oleson, unqualified, created Fearof.net in 2016. It is assumed his target audience are people interested in the logistics of fear and anxiety based disorders. From phobia induced mental health facts to examples of cultural phobias, this website was extremely useful and extensive, providing me with a significant understanding on the scope in which phobias effect individuals worldwide. A major limitation of this source was that none of the facts were sourced, questioning truthfulness. Nonetheless, it increased my awareness that during the conceptualisation of my posts, I need to act in a professional manner as phobias can be a serious mental condition.

 

  • WordPress – Social Media Ethics – An Introduction to Ethics

Desiree Tunnel, unqualified, provided an established argument on the importance of social media ethics and moral codes. Addressing a social media users audience, I believe the post was exceedingly helpful in regards to acting in an ethical manner with the submissions I receive for my digital artefact. The article stressed the importance of ethics and how credibility, honesty, and privacy rights are all vital aspects to appropriating a  principled social media page. The post was clear and concise, however did not provide further readings. It significantly helped me look beyond the process of creating content on my digital artefact and the additional moral codes to contemplate and consider.

Mark Brill, writer, discusses the reasoning behind the significance of social media platforms such as Instagram to teenagers and young adults.  I found this article useful as Phobify resides on Instagram. He states that Instagram has become popular because younger individuals do not want to read, and resonate greater meaning with pictures and videos on social media. The blog seems reliable and useful, being academically sourced, and provides further readings on the points discussed. It greatened my understanding on a potential target audience for my digital artefact. It also linked back to the idea that the medium is the message, a fundamental criteria, which increased my awareness to the connection between content, medium and audience.

 

  • Phobics-Awareness.Org

Phobic Awareness.org, un-authored, is targeted at individuals suffering from phobias. It provides an extensive amount of information on the detrimental side effects that phobias can have including depression and anxiety. Information on medication, caregivers and coping techniques made me realise the severity in which some people experience phobias. This website influenced me to alter the focus of my digital artefact. I now hope that the Phobify page not only brings understanding to individuals about the different phobias that people experience, but provides a collectively supported framework for individuals that may experience similar phobias by emphasising the importance of awareness.

 

  • RethinkingICT – Digital Artefact

This un-authored webpage provided a basic definition of a digital artefact. It was helpful to establish that my idea of creating a phobia page fell into the criteria of a digital artefact. The website had some limitations including its inability to provide any sources, it is un-authored and provided a list of examples with no detailed descriptions. However, since preparing for the digital artefact assessment the site has provided me with added knowledge of what a digital artefact is, and has allowed me to start the creative process for digital artefact ideas through the examples.
